Subscription Retention report - old vs new data + missing data

General question - I have read up on the old vs. new charts, but I am still not quite sure why there are significant differences between Cohort chart and Subscription Retention for old historical data? What exactly is causing differences for let’s say the first half of the year? I have a years worth of reports to the business and I just need to be able to tell them why they are seeing different numbers.
Second issue - for December 2020 and January 2021 we have a very large discrepancy on annual subscriptions specifically, December almost no annual subscriptions show in the report and we had many, January is showing some. The discrepancy is so big it looks like actual data is missing.
